Spotlight on Warner Notes
- Christina Boys is the editor of Center Street. She’s looking for heartland stories or stories in other settings that have heartland values (example, a small town story set in Maine). Length: 85-95,000 words. Women’s fiction
line, not necessarily romance. No explicit sex. Mostly contemporary stories, but will consider historical romance if appropriate. - 5-Spot: 80,000 words, mostly chick lit. There’s an article on it here.
- Agented only unless you receive a request from a conference appointment.
- Marketing team tips: To help book sales, launch a website. Offer contests and giveaways. Send booksellers ARC’s or other promotional items. Website newsletters are a great way to announce your book. Have your website address printed in your book and on all promotional items. Try mini-excerpts from your book. Attend BEA (Bookseller’s Expo).
- Most of the workshop was geared on what NOT to do. For example: books that are too long or too short—follow guidelines; settings that don’t sell (medieval Iceland); behaving unprofessionally in query letters (telling the editor that your friends love the book or that they must buy the book or their an idiot), etc. etc.
- Warner is having a contest. Three winners will win a free read by a Warner editor of the first three chapters and synopsis of your manuscript. Submit a 3×5 index card with your name, address, and e-mail address to the following address. Entries must be postmarked by September 20, 2005. Winners will be announced on October 4, 2005 on www.warnerforever.com
